Wrong Turn One film that didn't do the West Virginian tourist board any favours back in 2003 was this teen stalk and slash film by director Rob Schmit about retarded cannibal hillbillies running amok in the blue rich mountains (who are definitely NOT on the trail of the lonesome pine).

Med student Chris Flynn (Desmond Harrington) decides to try and take a short cut along some back roads to avoid a traffic jam on the main highway, when he inadvertently collides with a Land Rover full of students who are out backpacking.

With nobody seriously hurt, Chris and some of the group, led by the busty Eliza Dushku, decide to wonder off and see if they can find help. But of course it isn't too long before we realise something's amiss, and as they stumble across the clichéd creepy old cabin out in the woods you just know that some sort of grisly discovery is about to be made.

You guessed it, turns out that this cabin is home to a group of seriously deformed, inbred, retarded hillbillies who've got the taste for human flesh. And as our student friends run off through the piles of junked cars, they realise they're not the first persons to be hunted down in this manner (although the body parts in the fridge were a bit of a giveaway).

Whilst there's a few nice gore scenes, the clichéd plot is extremely predictable and "borrows" (i.e. rips off) elements from "Hills Have Eyes", "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and even "Deliverance". That's not to say the film is a complete waste of time, I actually quite enjoyed it in terms of light entertainment, but don't expect anything fresh or original here.

Overall marks : 4.5/10.

Terrifying Trivia.

  • Eliza Dushku's character Jesse Burlingame was named after the female lead in the Steven King novel "Geralds Game". Eliza is probably best known for her role as "Faith" in the TV series "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel".

  • Desmond Harrington, who plays Chris, also played Mike in "The Hole", and Jack in "Ghost Ship". He also went on to play Joey in the TV series "Dexter".

  • The films budget was $10,000,000.

  • Emmanuelle Chriqui, who plays Carly, also played Lee in the film "Ricky 6". She was also cast as Lily in "The Crow 4 : Wicked Prayer".

  • Although set in West Virginia, the movie was actually filmed in Ontario Canada.

  • In one scene, Desmond Harrington actually broke his ankle whilst jumping over a log. This made filming subsequent scenes, where he is shot in the left leg, very difficult as he was having to limp on his right.

  • The special effects were by the Stan Winston workshop, who also worked on "The Terminator" films and some of the Alien sequels. Winston was apparently touted to direct, but the job was eventually given to relative newcomer Rob Schmidt. Winston did serve as one of the producers though.
