Psycho 1998 title

Tag Line : Check in. Relax. Take a shower.

Psycho 1998Well I suppose it was bound to have happened sooner or later. Directed by Gus Van Sant, the original story was taken and remade into a brand new full colour feature. The film starts off showing us Marion Crane (played this time by Anne Heche) again embezzling money from her boss and taking off to see her boyfriend.

Of course, on route she makes an unfortunate stopover at the Bates Motel, where she meets the overdly polite, but somewhat weird, proprietor Norman (Vince Vaughn) and ends up going the same way that Janet Leigh did (screech-screech-screech).

Julianne Moore and Vigo Mortissen play the roles of Lila Crane and Sam Loomis this time, who go looking for Marion and get to discover Norman's secret about his mother, with William H. Macy playing the unfortunate private detective who's becomes Norman's "Mother's" next victim.

With the exception of a few minor elements (such as where Norman can be seen "Wacking" off as he watches Marion getting undressed) the film is virtually identical frame-by-frame to the original, including the dialogue, music and intro titles. As with most remakes, the film is quite good but doesn't really improve upon the original. That being said though it's still a very watchable and should appeal to both new and old horror fans alike.

Overall Marks : 5/10.

Terrifying Trivia.

  • Alternative tag lines... "A recreation of the nightmare that started it all...", "We all go a little mad sometimes...yes...sometimes once is enough", "They'll see, they'll know and they'll say. Why she wouldn't even harm a fly.", "The Classic Story of a Boy and His Mother", and "A new vision of the classic nightmare".

  • The films budget was $60,000,000.

  • The original motel sets from the previous Psycho films were used, however the Bates house was a new set built directly in front of the old one on the Universal studios back lot. After filming, the new house was moved alongside the old Bates house, to form part of the studio tour. However the new house has since been dismantled.

  • Anne Heche had never seen the original Psycho before being cast as Marion Crane.

  • Apparently director, Gus van Sant brought along a DVD player during filming and played the original Psycho, and they took their acting cues from that. When he spotted a mistake (a door opening without a key), van Sant decided to put the same mistake into his film. The director also makes a cameo appearance in the same scene Alfred Hitchcock did during the original. Here he is seen talking to a Hitchcock lookalike.

  • When Anne Heche goes to exchange cars at the dealers, she passes a bus stop displaying a poster for "Six Days and Seven Nights" in which she actually starred with Harrison Ford.

  • Vigo Mortensen also starred in "Leatherface-Texas Chainsaw Massacre 3". These days he is best known for playing Aragon in the 2001 "Lord of the Rings" trilogy by Peter Jackson.
