Critters 4 : Critters in Space title

Tag Line : In Space no one can smell rotten eggs.

Critters 4 : Critters in Space Having enjoyed all three previous "Critters" films, I was thoroughly looking forward to this fourth instalment. So you can imagine my utter disappointment at what a complete load of rubbish it turned out to be.

Flashing back to the end of part 3, we see Charlie being ordered to put the last remaining Krite eggs into a bio preservation pod. Unfortunately poor old Charlie doesn't manage to get back out in time before the pod blasts off again, and so he gets frozen along with the eggs.

Fast forward to the year 2045, and the crew of a deep space salvage ship come across the pod floating through space. They are contacted soon after by Councillor Ug Tetra (yep, Terrance Mann again) of the Terracorp company who claims the pod is theirs, having been lost in space for over 50 years, and instructs them to take it to a nearby unmanned space station for collection.

Unfortunately, upon arrival, the Captain (Anders Hove) decides to crack open the pod. Freeing the bewildered Charlie, who's been held in stasis all these years, and unleashing the Critters on to the space station. Sadly, the movie takes a nosedive from this point onwards as there's only actually two critters on the station, which severely limits the amount of mayhem in the script. The plot trundles along at a dreary pace, wasting it's time following the characters wandering aimlessly round the space station, and very little else.

There's very little humour to speak off, and the film really isn't very entertaining as it suffers from a distinct lack of Critter (I mean only 2 critters for Christ's sakes?). A big disappointment which promised so much, and yet delivered so little. Not even the inclusion of horror veteran Brad Douriff was able to save this. Small wonder that this went direct-to-video in the US as well.

Overall Marks : 4/10.

Terrifying Trivia.

  • Alternate tag lines "They're invading YOUR space", "In space they love to hear you scream".

  • The external space scenes and some of the internal sets were re-used from the film "Android" which also starred Don Opper.

  • Although filmed back-to-back with part 3, this section was directed by Rupert Harvey who produced the previous film. This is to date the only film he has directed, but has worked in a production capacity on "Nightmare on Elm Street 5", the 1988 remake of "The Blob" and the aforementioned "Android".

  • Anne Ramsey, who plays Dr McCormick, went on to play Lt Grace in the 2001 remake of "Planet of the Apes".

  • The footage of Ug's ship near the end of the film was taken from "Critters 2".

  • Angela Basset, who plays Fran, has also starred in "Boyz N The Hood", "Malcolm X" and "Vampire in Brooklyn".

  • Horror veteran Brad Douriff, who plays Albert, is probably best known for providing Chucky's voice in the "Child's Play" films. He also appeared as Wormintongue in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy.
